Triticale Grass Seeds

Grow fresh green cereal grass with × Triticosecale, a cultivated hybrid of wheat and rye. This Non-GMO annual cereal is suitable for shallow indoor growing trays and can also be grown to a short sprout stage.

Triticale combines characteristics of its wheat and rye parents and grows as an upright cool-season grass. For young grass production, the seed can be soaked, spread over moist growing medium, and harvested within about 7–10 days under suitable conditions.

Growing Triticale Grass

Rinse the seed and soak it in clean water for approximately 6–8 hours. Drain thoroughly after soaking.

Spread the soaked seed evenly over a shallow tray containing a thin layer of moist growing medium. Keep the medium consistently moist but avoid standing water.

Provide airflow and bright light as the shoots develop. Harvest the young green grass at approximately 7–10 days or at your preferred stage.

Sprouting Option

Triticale can also be grown as a short grain sprout. After soaking, place the seed in a suitable sprouting jar, bag, or tray and rinse regularly.

Drain thoroughly after each rinse. Short sprouts may be ready in approximately 2–3 days, ideally before substantial green shoot growth develops.

What to Expect

Growth rate varies with seed lot, temperature, moisture, airflow, light, and growing method. The current True Leaf grass page contains both a 5–9 day maturity table and a separate 7–10 day grass-stage recommendation; for this listing, we use 7–10 days because it specifically describes the grass harvest stage.

If allowed to mature as a cereal crop rather than harvested as young grass, triticale can grow several feet tall. USDA describes mature plants as approximately 3–5 feet depending on cultivar and location.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is triticale wheat?

No. Triticale is a cultivated hybrid derived from wheat and rye and is botanically classified as × Triticosecale.

How long should I soak the seed?

Soak for approximately 6–8 hours, then drain thoroughly before planting or sprouting.

How long does triticale grass take to grow?

Young grass is generally ready in approximately 7–10 days under suitable conditions.

Can the seed also be sprouted?

Yes. A short sprout stage may be reached in approximately 2–3 days after soaking under suitable conditions.

Does triticale need soil?

For grass production, a shallow layer of moist growing medium provides root support and moisture. Sprouting can also be done in appropriate jars, bags, or sprouting trays.
