How to Plant Mary Washington Asparagus Seeds

For best results, soak asparagus seeds in warm water for 24–48 hours before planting. Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before the last frost, or sow outdoors in mid spring after the soil has warmed.

Sow seeds about 1/4–1/2 inch deep in light, loose, well-draining soil. Keep the soil warm and evenly moist during germination. Asparagus seeds can germinate slowly, so patience is important.

Transplant seedlings outdoors after all danger of frost has passed. Choose a permanent garden location because asparagus is a long-lived perennial crop and can remain productive for many years once established.

Garden Care Tips

Mary Washington Asparagus grows best in rich, well-prepared soil with good drainage. Before planting, work compost into the bed to improve soil structure and fertility. Keep the planting area free from heavy weeds, especially while young plants are becoming established.

Avoid overwatering or allowing the soil to stay soggy, as wet soil can lead to root problems. During dry periods, provide steady moisture to support strong root development.

Harvesting Mary Washington Asparagus

Asparagus usually needs 2–3 years from seed before producing a strong harvest. Avoid heavy harvesting during the first year so the roots can become established. In the second year, you may harvest lightly if the plants are strong. By the third year, plants can produce a more regular harvest.

Harvest spears when they reach about 7–9 inches tall and are about the thickness of a pencil. Cut spears near the base with a sharp knife. After harvest season, allow the plants to grow tall fern-like foliage so they can store energy in the roots for next year’s crop.

Important Growing Note

Germination and growth results may vary depending on temperature, soil, moisture, sunlight, and growing conditions. Asparagus is a long-term crop that rewards patience. A well-prepared asparagus bed can provide fresh spring harvests for many seasons.
