GROWING GUIDE

The following instructions are general guidance for edible chrysanthemum. Adjust planting dates and spacing to your climate and harvest preferences.

  1. Direct sow in spring or late summer for a cool-weather crop.
  2. Prepare loose, well-drained soil and remove competing weeds.
  3. Sow approximately 1/4 inch deep and cover lightly.
  4. Keep the seedbed evenly moist. Germination commonly takes about 1–2 weeks under suitable conditions; moderate soil temperatures around 59–68°F (15–20°C) support germination.
  5. Thin plants to approximately 6 inches apart for leafy growth. Allow more room if growing larger plants.
  6. Choose full sun or partial shade and continue watering regularly without saturating the roots.
  7. Sow small batches approximately every two weeks during suitable weather to stagger your harvest.

CONTAINER CARE

Use a container with drainage holes and a well-draining potting mix. Check moisture frequently, as containers can dry out more quickly than garden beds.

Avoid overcrowding. Give each plant enough space for leaf development and airflow.

HARVESTING AND KITCHEN USE

Pick young, tender leaves for the best eating texture. Older foliage can become stronger in flavor, particularly in warm or stressful growing conditions.

Harvest individual leaves as needed, or cut shoots while leaving healthy lower growth for possible regrowth. Avoid removing all the foliage at once.

Wash harvested greens before preparing them. Try a small handful in your favorite soup or vegetable dish and adjust the amount to suit your taste.

FLOWERING

Plants left unharvested may develop yellow and white daisy-like flowers. For a leafy-green crop, prioritize harvesting tender foliage before flowering rather than waiting for the plants to reach their full flowering size.

NATURAL SEED NOTICE

Germination, growth and harvest timing vary with seed condition, temperature, moisture, soil, sunlight and gardening practices. Growing instructions are a general guide, and individual results may vary.
