How to Plant Morning Glory Seeds

  1. Prepare the seeds: Morning Glory seeds have a hard outer coating. Carefully nick the seed coat with a clean knife or file, or soak the seeds in room-temperature water for 12–24 hours before planting.
  2. Choose the planting time: Direct sow outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. For earlier flowers in colder climates, start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the final expected frost.
  3. Sow the seeds: Plant approximately 1/4 inch deep in moist, well-drained soil.
  4. Provide warmth: Maintain a temperature of approximately 65–85°F. Bottom heat may help improve germination when starting seeds indoors.
  5. Maintain moisture: Keep the soil evenly moist during germination. Do not allow the growing medium to dry out completely.
  6. Add support: Install a trellis, fence, stake, or other climbing structure while the plants are young.

Plant Care

Grow Morning Glory vines in a location receiving full sun. Water regularly during establishment, but avoid leaving the roots in waterlogged soil. A balanced fertilizer may be applied approximately once per month according to the fertilizer label. Prune or guide the vines as needed to control their shape and encourage coverage of the support structure.

In warm climates, mature plants may drop seeds and return in future growing seasons. Check local regulations before planting, as Morning Glory may be restricted or considered invasive in certain locations.
