WHY GROW GARLAND SERRATED LEAF?

Garland Serrated Leaf is a fast-growing edible chrysanthemum valued for its deeply cut foliage, distinctive flavor and ability to produce multiple side shoots.

The tender young leaves can be harvested when the plants are only a few inches tall. When the growing point is preserved, plants may continue producing additional stems and leaves for repeated harvesting.

This variety is an excellent choice for gardeners growing Japanese, Chinese, Korean or Vietnamese vegetables. It also performs well in small gardens because the compact plants can be grown in raised beds and containers.

The serrated-leaf type generally develops a more pronounced flavor than broad-leaf or round-leaf chrysanthemum varieties.

FLAVOR AND CULINARY USES

Garland Serrated Leaf has aromatic foliage with a distinctive herbal and tangy flavor. Young leaves generally have a milder taste, while older foliage develops a stronger flavor.

The tender leaves and stems may be used in:

  • Hot pots
  • Soups and broths
  • Stir-fries
  • Noodle dishes
  • Mixed salads
  • Steamed vegetable dishes
  • Traditional Asian recipes

Harvest young for the mildest flavor. Add the greens near the end of cooking because the tender leaves and stems cook quickly.

WHEN TO PLANT

Chrysanthemum greens perform best during cool weather.

Direct sow outdoors in early spring when the soil can be worked. For a fall harvest, sow again during late summer or early fall when temperatures begin to cool.

Plants may tolerate a light frost, especially when protected. Growth may slow or plants may begin flowering more quickly when temperatures rise above approximately 77°F.

Gardeners in mild-winter climates may also grow chrysanthemum greens during fall and winter.

DIRECT-SOWING INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Select a location receiving full sun or partial shade.
  2. Prepare fertile, loose and well-drained soil.
  3. Sow seeds approximately 1/4 inch deep.
  4. Gently cover the seeds with soil.
  5. Keep the seedbed consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  6. Seedlings commonly emerge within approximately 7–10 days.
  7. Thin seedlings to approximately 4–8 inches apart, depending on the desired harvest size.
  8. Leave approximately 12 inches between rows.
  9. For a continuous supply of young greens, sow another row every 2–3 weeks during suitable cool weather.

STARTING SEEDS INDOORS

Seeds may be started indoors approximately 3–4 weeks before transplanting.

Sow approximately 1/4 inch deep in moist, well-draining seed-starting mix. Maintain moderate temperatures and provide bright light after the seedlings emerge.

Transplant outdoors after the seedlings become established. Gradually harden the plants outdoors before placing them permanently in the garden.

SUNLIGHT REQUIREMENTS

Garland Serrated Leaf can grow in full sun or partial shade.

During cool spring and fall weather, plants generally perform well in full sun. During warmer weather, light afternoon shade may help protect the foliage and delay flowering.

SOIL AND DRAINAGE

Plant in fertile, balanced soil with good drainage.

Chrysanthemum greens are adaptable to different soil conditions but perform best when the soil contains adequate organic matter and drains freely.

Avoid planting in locations that remain constantly saturated or waterlogged.

WATERING

Keep the soil evenly moist during germination and early growth.

Water when the upper surface of the soil begins to dry. Avoid allowing the soil to become completely dry for extended periods, but do not keep the roots constantly saturated.

A thin layer of mulch may help retain moisture and keep the roots cool.

SUCCESSIVE SOWING

For a continuous harvest, sow a small amount of seed every 2–3 weeks during suitable cool weather.

Successive sowing can provide multiple plantings at different stages of growth and extend the harvesting period.

GROWING IN CONTAINERS

Garland Serrated Leaf Chrysanthemum Greens grow well in containers, window boxes and raised beds.

Choose a container with adequate drainage holes and fill it with quality, well-draining potting mix. Place the container in full sun or partial shade.

Container-grown plants may require more frequent watering than plants growing in the ground. Check the soil regularly, especially during dry or windy weather.

HARVESTING

Young greens may be harvested when plants reach approximately 3–4 inches tall.

For cut-and-come-again harvesting, use clean scissors to remove the outer leaves or upper stems while leaving the lower portion and growing point intact.

Clean cuts can encourage the production of additional side shoots. Harvest frequently for tender leaves and a milder flavor.

Older leaves remain usable but generally develop a stronger and more pronounced taste.

FLOWERING

When allowed to mature, plants may produce daisy-like flowers in yellow, white or orange shades.

Flowering becomes more likely as temperatures rise or the plants mature. For continued production of tender edible greens, harvest regularly before the plants begin flowering.

COMMON GROWING PROBLEMS

Poor Germination: Keep the soil consistently moist and maintain moderate temperatures during germination.

Weak or Leggy Seedlings: Provide additional light and avoid overcrowding.

Early Flowering: Warm temperatures, long days or plant stress may encourage bolting and flowering.

Strong or Bitter Flavor: Harvest younger leaves and grow the plants during cooler weather.

Yellowing Leaves: Check for excessive watering, poor drainage, nutrient stress or overcrowding.

Slow Growth: Confirm that the plants receive adequate light, moisture and soil fertility.

NATURAL SEED NOTICE

Seed germination and plant performance depend on temperature, moisture, planting depth, soil quality, sunlight, climate and individual gardening practices.

Growing instructions are provided as a general guide. Germination and harvest results may vary, and germination of every individual seed cannot be guaranteed.
