Ficus carica Seeds – Common Fig

Grow Ficus carica from seed with Mai’s Family Fig Tree Seeds.

Commonly known as the Common Fig or Edible Fig, Ficus carica is a deciduous fruit-tree species native to the Mediterranean, Western Asia, and nearby regions.

Under favorable conditions, mature trees may reach approximately 30 feet tall. Plants develop distinctive deeply lobed leaves, and fruit colors within the species may range from green and yellow to purple.

Ficus carica may be grown as a landscape tree, espalier, or container plant.

Product form: Seeds only. Live trees, seedlings, fig cuttings, fruit, soil, containers, and growing supplies are not included.

Important Seed-Grown Fig Notice

Figs grown from seed are genetically variable.

Seed-grown plants are not guaranteed to:

  • Match the parent tree
  • Match any named cultivar
  • Produce fruit identical to the parent
  • Produce edible fruit
  • Develop the same fruit color, size, flavor, or quality

Some seedlings may become male caprifigs with small inedible fruit. Only some seedlings may become female trees capable of edible fruit.

For a known cultivar that stays true to type, vegetative propagation by cuttings is normally preferred.

How to Germinate Ficus carica Seeds

1. Pre-Soak

Soak seeds in water for approximately 24 hours before sowing.

2. Prepare the Growing Medium

Use finely milled peat moss or another fine, sterile seed-starting medium.

Moisten the medium evenly before sowing. It should remain moist but not waterlogged.

3. Surface Sow

Scatter the seeds over the surface of the growing medium.

Do not bury or cover the seeds.

Gently press them against the moist surface if needed to improve seed-to-medium contact.

4. Provide Warmth

Maintain approximately 75°F or warmer.

Warm, stable conditions are important for germination.

5. Maintain Moisture and Humidity

Keep the seed surface continuously moist using gentle misting or a high-humidity propagation setup.

Avoid:

  • Standing water
  • Continuously soggy growing media
  • Heavy watering that moves the tiny seeds
  • Allowing the surface to dry completely

6. Germination

Under suitable warmth and humidity, germination may occur in approximately 3–5 weeks.

Germination may be uneven, so continue providing suitable warmth and moisture while waiting for additional seedlings.

After Germination

After seedlings emerge:

  • Provide bright light
  • Keep seedlings warm
  • Gradually increase airflow
  • Maintain even moisture
  • Avoid continuously saturated growing media

Once seedlings become established, move them into a well-drained, organically rich potting mix or garden soil.

Sunlight

Established plants may be grown in full sun to partial shade.

Abundant sunlight generally supports stronger growth and better fruiting potential.

Watering

Water regularly during dry periods.

Established fig trees may tolerate some dryness, but steady moisture supports better growth.

Container Growing

Ficus carica may be grown in containers.

Container growing can be especially useful in colder climates where plants may require protection from severe winter cold.

  • Use a container with drainage holes
  • Use fertile, well-draining potting mix
  • Provide full sun to partial shade
  • Maintain regular moisture during active growth
  • Protect from severe winter cold when necessary

Important Fruit Information

The common name “Edible Fig” refers to the Ficus carica species.

It does not mean that every tree grown from seed is guaranteed to produce edible fruit.

Seed propagation produces genetic variation.

Some seedlings may become male caprifigs with small, inedible fruit. Other seedlings may become female trees capable of producing edible fruit.

Fruit production, color, size, flavor, productivity, and resemblance to the parent tree cannot be guaranteed.
