How to Grow Green Mustard (Cải Bẹ Xanh) Successfully - Step-by-Step Guide

Green mustard (Cải Bẹ Xanh) have large or small stalks, with broad leaves that range from dark green to banana leaf green. The leaves and stems have a mildly bitter and spicy taste, making them a popular choice for soups.

Step 1: Soak and Germinate Seeds

To start, soak the green mustard seeds in warm water (2 parts boiling water : 3 parts cold water) for about 4 - 6 hours.

After soaking, wrap the seeds in a damp cloth to keep them moist until they begin to split, indicating they're ready for planting.

Step 2: Planting

Use a small stick to create straight lines or 0.5 - 1 cm deep holes in the soil. Scatter the seeds along the line, then cover them with a thin layer of soil. Water gently to keep the soil moist, encouraging healthy growth.

Step 3: Care and Maintenance

Water the seeds twice daily – once in the early morning and once in the cool afternoon.

After 10 days, add organic fertilizer (such as cow or chicken manure) to provide essential nutrients.

As the plants start to spread their leaves, continue fertilizing every 7 days for optimal growth.

Step 4: Harvesting

Green mustard greens are ready for harvest after 30 - 40 days.

For tender, young greens, harvest sooner by cutting at the base of the plant.
